RYA DAY SKIPPER & ICC

The RYA Day Skipper course with Academy Sailing represents 'part 2' of the exciting journey required to wear the yacht 'skipper' or 'captain' hat, with students having previously completed the 'RYA Competent Crew' course that provides the solid foundations necessary for those wanting to progress to Day Skipper and take charge of their own yacht crew. This is the level where the satisfaction and freedom of being in charge of a sailing yacht really does become reality.

The RYA Day Skipper course covers all aspects of skippering a modern cruising yacht, including boat handling, navigation, pilotage and seamanship skills. During your course you will get the opportunity to skipper short passages under the watchful eye of your Academy Sailing instructor. You will gain the experience and confidence necessary to allow you to skipper a cruising yacht in familiar waters by day.

RYA Day Skipper courses with Academy Sailing

Importantly this Day Skipper qualification with Academy Sailing also entitles you to the ICC (UK International Certificate for Operators of Pleasure Craft). It's the RYA Day Skipper qualification with ICC that charter companies and flotilla holiday operators look for from you before taking your sailing holiday booking.

Navigation exercise as part of the RYA Day Skipper course with Academy Sailing

For this course you need to have logged around 100NM of sailing on a sailing yacht (not dinghy), which you may have already done on your Competent Crew course. You also need to have an understanding of navigation theory before booking yourself on the Day Skipper practical course. This practical course lasts for 5 days and can be completed over the course of 5 consecutive days, or a combination of a 2-day module and a 3-day module, depending on your availability.

As your course with Academy Sailing involves continuous assessment by your instructor rather than an end-of-course exam, this takes a lot of the pressure away and allows you to focus on enjoying the course with regular helpful feedback from your instructor so you know exactly how you are doing and any areas you may want help with.

The RYA Day Skipper practical course is ideal for sailors who have attained Competent Crew level skills and have either completed their RYA Day Skipper theory or have sufficient knowledge of sailing theory at that level.
